Which heat pump rebates are available in Ottawa?

Your current heating fuel, household eligibility and installation plans determine which programs are worth checking. The options below are not one combined rebate: a purchase rebate, a no-cost installation and a loan work differently.

ONTARIO PURCHASE REBATE

Home Renovation Savings

Enbridge natural gas
$500/ton, up to $2,000
Electricity, oil, propane or wood
$1,250/ton, up to $7,500

For eligible purchased cold-climate air-source systems. Rentals and ground-source systems use different rates.

Pre-installation approval is required.

INCOME-QUALIFIED ASSISTANCE

Energy Affordability Program

Approved upgrades at no cost

Check household eligibility for electric- or oil-heated homes. The program arranges the assessment and approved installation.

Apply through Save on Energy before buying independently.

CITY OF OTTAWA FINANCING

Better Homes Ottawa

A loan that must be repaid

A separate $700/ton cold-climate air-source incentive may apply to eligible loan participants.

A City of Ottawa property-tax account and energy assessments are required.

ANNOUNCED · UPCOMING

National Heat Pump Rebate

Up to $10,000 or $2,000

Announced amounts depend on income and eligibility. The application opening date has not been published in the reviewed sources.

Heat pump rebates for Ottawa homes with natural gas

Home Renovation Savings has a specific rebate schedule for qualifying Enbridge Gas customers. A home heated by natural gas should not use the larger purchase maximum advertised for electricity, oil, propane or wood.

Keeping a furnace as backup can be an option. Ask the participating contractor to verify the complete indoor and outdoor equipment combination and required controls. The HRS heat-pump rebate does not pay for the backup furnace itself.

Electric, oil and propane heating: compare the right support

For a qualifying home connected to the Ontario electricity grid, HRS offers a different purchase schedule when the existing heating source is electricity, oil, propane or wood. Equipment rentals have their own schedule.

Income-eligible households using electricity or oil should also check the Energy Affordability Program before buying. Its heat-pump support is arranged through the program, not claimed as a refund on a system purchased independently. The oil-heating route is for owners with an above-ground oil tank; the electric-heating route can include qualifying renters.

Better Homes Ottawa: financing and a separate incentive

Better Homes Ottawa is a repayable loan tied to an eligible property’s City of Ottawa tax account. Interest and an administration charge apply. Its separate heat-pump incentive is for qualifying loan participants, not every homeowner who installs a heat pump.

Check the municipality on your property-tax bill. Being in an HVAC contractor’s Ottawa-area service territory does not establish municipal program eligibility. Properties outside the city need to check their own municipal options, even when Ontario programs may still apply.

The City process includes a Notice to Proceed, pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide assessments, a funding request and completion documents. Confirm the required sequence before incurring project costs.

What the new federal rebate means for Ottawa

The October 8 National Heat Pump Rebate announcement describes up to $10,000 for eligible below-median-income households and $2,000 for other eligible homeowners. Canada’s program page still calls it upcoming; signing up for launch updates is not an application or approval.

The published announcement does not expressly exclude natural-gas-heated homes. That is not confirmation that every gas-to-heat-pump or hybrid installation qualifies. The applicable income threshold, heating-system requirements and eligible installation dates still need confirmation.

The federal announcement permits provincial rebate combinations. Do not add the headline amounts together: your federal eligibility, Ontario award and any municipal incentive each need to be checked. We do not deduct an unconfirmed federal award from your installation budget.

What to confirm before booking installation

A good quote separates the installed price from potential funding. Review these details before signing or paying a deposit.

Plan the heat pump around your home

A rebate helps with the purchase price, but the system still needs to suit your home. Ask about winter heating capacity, airflow, snow clearance, drainage and service access. The Kanata installation pictured above shows one placement option; equipment eligibility must be verified for the system in your quote.

Ductwork and room layout matter too. A furnace-heated home needs a different assessment from a home with baseboards or radiators. Use our equipment guides to prepare questions, then have the installer confirm sizing and placement on site.

Get an Ottawa heat pump installation quote

We operate HeatPumpRebates.ca through AirZone HVAC Services. Our team can assess your home, explain suitable equipment and prepare an installation quote. We serve Ottawa-area communities including Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven, Orléans, Stittsville, Gloucester and Manotick.

Use the comparison and finder without contacting us, or request an AirZone quote when you are ready for an installation assessment. Program administrators—not this website—confirm eligibility and funding.

Ottawa heat pump rebate questions

Is Better Homes Ottawa the only heat pump program for Ottawa residents?

No. Eligible residents can also check Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings and Energy Affordability Program. The National Heat Pump Rebate is separately announced as upcoming. Better Homes Ottawa adds municipal financing and a separate incentive for qualifying loan participants.

Can I get the same rebate in Kanata, Barrhaven and Orléans?

HRS uses heating fuel, property, utility and equipment requirements rather than a neighbourhood-specific rebate amount. For Better Homes Ottawa, confirm that the property has a City of Ottawa tax account and meets the program’s other conditions.

Do Ottawa heat pump rebates cover a new furnace?

The Home Renovation Savings heat-pump rebate does not cover the backup furnace itself. A qualifying heat pump may be paired with a suitable new or existing furnace. Any separate furnace promotion needs its own terms and should not be described as the heat-pump rebate.

Can I install now and apply for the new federal rebate later?

Do not assume that you can. The October 8 announcement does not establish retroactive eligibility for an installation completed before launch. Check official federal instructions before relying on that funding; existing Ontario programs have their own approval requirements.

Does requesting an AirZone quote apply for a government rebate?

No. It requests an installation quote. The required program application, equipment checks and approval process are separate. Ask who will complete each step before the installation starts.
